Tegueste Celebrates Canarian Craftsmanship and International Lace Conference
Tegueste, Tenerife, celebrated Canarian craftsmanship and hosted the First International Lace Conference with music, dance, traditional sports, and displays of local heritage.
The Canary Islands are known for their unique crafts, a legacy of the islands' culture. Across all the islands, you'll often find craft fairs and events that showcase these traditions and help local artisans promote their work.
Recently, the town of Tegueste in Tenerife became the heart of Canarian craftsmanship, hosting the First International Lace Conference. This event brought people together to celebrate Canarian identity, with lace taking center stage.
The town recently held a special event organized by the City Council, filled with displays of local traditions.
The pedestrian area and Plaza de San Marcos in Tegueste came alive with music and dance, showcasing the town's unique character. Many local groups, representing the heart and soul of the municipality's traditions, participated.
Besides the music and dance, there were also exhibitions of Canarian wrestling and "juego del palo" (a traditional Canarian martial art using sticks). The Association of Carts and Wagons of the Pilgrimage of Tegueste also had a tent where they explained how they make their carts and the historical importance of these iconic vehicles.
To end the event, all the participating groups joined together to sing 'En abril de romería,' a song that embodies the festive spirit of Tegueste.
Efraín Medina, an Island Councilor, shared his thoughts on social media about the event, which was supported by the Cabildo de Tenerife. "Yesterday, Tegueste experienced an exciting afternoon," he posted.
He also included a video of the traditional music and dance, adding, "The people came out to thank speakers from 11 countries for choosing our town for the I International Lace Conference. Thank you for the love, the shared traditions, and for making us feel so happy."
