Teatro La República presents "Enemigo," a modern adaptation of Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" exploring environmental and political corruption, tonight at the University of La Laguna's Paraninfo.

Teatro La República is presenting "Enemigo" tonight at the University of La Laguna's Paraninfo. The show, which starts at 8:30 PM, is a new take on Henrik Ibsen's classic play "An Enemy of the People." Nacho Cabrera adapted and directed the production, starring Toni Báez, Alberto Aliaga, David Arada, and Niria Ro.

The synopsis describes this version as "a disturbing mirror of our reality." It suggests that in a time when truth feels rare and democracy is weakened by corruption and apathy, the story has a powerful message.

While based on the original plot, the play has been updated for today's world. The idea that the biggest threat to reason and freedom is often popular opinion is still a thought-provoking concept that sparks discussion across different times and places.

The theatre company explains that in their adaptation, a spa called Alisios Resort, possibly located in the Canary Islands, becomes the center of an environmental, political, and social crisis. Dr. Thomas Stockmann discovers dangerous issues with the spa's water and finds himself up against powerful forces, as well as a society that would rather ignore the truth.

"Enemigo" is presented as a drama about ethics and politics, exploring themes of truth, justice, and the personal sacrifices made when challenging the established order. In an age of misinformation, environmental problems, and widespread corruption, this enduring play powerfully reminds us that speaking the truth can often lead to isolation.

Tickets cost 10 euros for the general public and 8 euros for students. They can be bought online at ecoentradas.com.
