TEA Tenerife to Screen Award-Winning Single Parenthood Drama 'Solomamma'
TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes will screen Janicke Askevold’s directorial debut Solomamma, an acclaimed film exploring the complexities of single motherhood, from Friday to Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
This weekend, TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes is screening Solomamma, a film that explores modern family life and the challenges of single parenthood. The feature, which marks the directorial debut of Janicke Askevold, will be shown from Friday to Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Solomamma has already earned recognition, including an award from the Ecumenical Jury at the Locarno Film Festival and a critics' prize at the BCN Film Fest. The film is based on real-life stories from women who chose to become single mothers, often through assisted reproduction. It offers an honest look at the pressures of social expectations, the search for personal identity, and the realities of raising a child outside of a traditional family structure.
The film stars Lisa Loven Kongsli, Herbert Nordrum, Nasrin Khusrawi, and Rolf Kristian Larsen. It will be presented in its original Norwegian with Spanish subtitles. This project is the latest milestone for Askevold, who previously studied at the Atelier Theatral de Création in France and worked in theater in Paris before moving into film with her 2020 short Le Contrat and the 2021 series Sammen Alene.
The screening highlights a growing demographic reality across Europe: the rise of single-parent households. While recent Spanish legislation has worked to better protect these families, cinema remains a vital tool for normalizing these experiences. By moving away from idealization, Askevold’s work addresses the emotional complexities of single parenthood, sparking important conversations about autonomy and belonging in today’s society.
