TEA Tenerife Hosts 1976 Retrospective Film Series

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes is hosting a new summer film series that looks back at the year 1976. Titled "50 Years Later" and curated by the center’s film department head, Emilio Ramal, the series highlights four influential movies that changed cinema’s storytelling and visual style half a century ago.

The selection reflects the major social and political shifts of the 1970s. Screenings will take place every Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free until the venue reaches capacity.

The series kicks off with Cría cuervos, Carlos Saura’s look at the Spanish transition to democracy through a child's eyes. On July 13, the program continues with Rocky, the John G. Avildsen sports drama that became a Hollywood landmark.

The second half of the month shifts toward more complex and provocative themes. On July 20, the center will screen Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses (restricted to viewers 18 and older due to explicit content). The series concludes on July 27 with Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, a gritty exploration of urban isolation in post-Vietnam New York.

These screenings are designed to encourage critical discussion. By showing these films in their original language with subtitles, the series offers audiences a chance to see how the cinema of 1976 captured the era's defining tensions, from the end of dictatorships to the changing cultural attitudes toward violence and desire.
