TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes to Screen Yôji Yamada’s 'A Taxi in Tokyo'

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes is wrapping up its summer film series with A Taxi in Tokyo, the latest movie from acclaimed Japanese director Yôji Yamada. The film will be shown in the island’s capital this Friday through Sunday at 7:00 p.m. It serves as a Japanese reimagining of the French film Driving Madeleine.

The movie features a cast including Chieko Baisho, Takuya Kimura, Yu Aoi, and Takaya Sakoda. It has already earned significant praise on the festival circuit, including a showing at the BCN Film Fest and eleven nominations at the Japan Academy Awards. The screenings will be in the original Japanese with Spanish subtitles.

The story follows a Tokyo taxi driver struggling with money who is hired to drive an 85-year-old woman to her new care home. As they travel across the city, each stop prompts the passenger to share memories from her life.

This screening is part of a growing effort by Spanish cultural institutions to bring international independent cinema to local audiences. By showcasing the work of a veteran director like Yamada, TEA highlights a focus on themes of aging and self-reflection—subjects often explored in modern Japanese cinema to help viewers connect with the stories of the past.
