TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes Opens 'Footnotes' Exhibition by Cabello/Carceller
TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes opens Footnotes, an exhibition by Cabello/Carceller that explores marginalized histories and the enduring impact of past political repression, running for free until July 5.
This Friday at 7:00 p.m., TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes will open Footnotes, a new exhibition by the artist duo Cabello/Carceller. The project acts as a form of "political archaeology," aiming to shift our focus toward the overlooked stories and marginalized voices within history.
Curated by Sergio Rubira with assistance from Daniasa Curbelo, the exhibition avoids presenting history as a closed book. Instead, it challenges official narratives by highlighting figures like Eleno de Céspedes and Agustina González López—individuals whose lives defied traditional labels and were consequently pushed to the sidelines of history.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is a new work titled The Impossible Garden of Tefía. Prologue for a Concentration Camp. In it, artists Helena Cabello and Ana Carceller examine the repression that took place at the Agricultural Penitentiary Colony in Fuerteventura during the dictatorship. Rather than simply documenting the past, the artists aim to show how the control mechanisms of that era still influence the exclusion and social debates we face today.
During the project’s presentation, Tenerife’s Councilor for Culture and Museums, José Carlos Acha, joined the curators and artists to discuss the exhibition’s significance. The team emphasized that the work is intended to help us recognize that past laws and persecution were not isolated incidents. For Cabello and Carceller, art serves as a tool for social reflection, helping us understand how historical patterns continue to shape our current political reality and civil rights.
Footnotes will be open to the public for free until July 5. Visitors can view the exhibition from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, including holidays.
