TEA Tenerife Concludes Manolo Millares Centenary With Focus on His Experimental Plays
TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes concludes its year-long centenary celebration of artist Manolo Millares this Thursday with a special event exploring his lesser-known career as a playwright.
This Thursday, TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes will conclude its year-long celebration of the centenary of artist Manolo Millares (1926–1972). The final session, starting at 6:00 p.m., will shift focus to a lesser-known side of his career: his work as a playwright.
Directed by Mariano de Santa Ana, the program has spent the year exploring how the Gran Canarian artist challenged traditional historical narratives through his art. This closing event highlights his "dramas to be read"—experimental plays that remained largely unknown until researchers José Luis de la Nuez and Julián Díaz Sánchez recently compiled them for publication.
The evening will feature a performance by Aranza Coello, who will read a selection of these theatrical works. Following the performance, art historian Natalia Álvarez Simó and Julián Díaz Sánchez will lead a discussion on the significance of these writings within the broader career of Millares, a key figure in 20th-century Spanish art.
The event is free to attend, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the venue reaches capacity.
