Acclaimed filmmaker Tatiana Huezo will receive the Personal Narrative award at the DOCanarias International Reality Film Festival, which runs from September 8 to 12 in Puerto de la Cruz.

Filmmaker Tatiana Huezo will be the guest of honor at this year’s DOCanarias International Reality Film Festival, held in Puerto de la Cruz from September 8 to 12. Festival organizers announced that Huezo will receive the Personal Narrative award, honoring a career that masterfully blurs the lines between documentary filmmaking and narrative fiction.

Huezo is celebrated for her ability to humanize complex social issues, such as systemic violence and poverty, by focusing on individual stories rather than abstract statistics. This approach has made her one of the most respected voices in contemporary Ibero-American cinema. Her work will be highlighted on September 12 at Sala Timanfaya, where she will host a Q&A session following a screening of Tempestad. Her film El eco will serve as the festival’s closing feature.

The Government of the Canary Islands has highlighted the festival’s strategic importance, with Cristóbal de la Rosa, Director General of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries, noting that the archipelago serves as a natural bridge between Latin America and Africa. He emphasized that cinema acts as a vital tool for analyzing and addressing the shared social challenges faced by these two regions.

Huezo’s career began in cinematography, but she shifted toward directing after facing gender barriers in the technical side of the industry two decades ago. Her filmmaking process is defined by the deep, ethical bonds she forms with the people she films.

This latest honor adds to a collection of 47 international awards. Her notable achievements include becoming the first woman to win the Ariel Award for Best Director in 2017 for Tempestad, as well as major successes at the Berlin International Film Festival for El eco and the Cannes Film Festival for Prayers for the Stolen.
