Taganana Sports Center Renovation Halted Again Due to Road Damage
The renovation of the Taganana sports center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been suspended indefinitely due to storm-damaged access roads preventing heavy machinery from reaching the site.
The renovation of the Taganana sports center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has hit another delay, leaving residents uncertain about when the project will be finished. The City Council has officially paused construction because storm damage to local roads in Anaga prevents heavy machinery from reaching the site.
This project has faced constant administrative and technical hurdles since it was first proposed in 2021. Currently, the renovation is valued at 459,000 euros. Alicia Cebrián, the head of the Department of Sports, confirmed that while the changing rooms are finished, other tasks—such as fencing the court, stabilizing slopes, and repairing concrete walls—must wait until the Infrastructure department fixes the damaged streets. Although the council still hopes to finish the project by the end of the year, there is no set date for when work will resume.
The history of this facility highlights the difficulties often involved in managing local public works. After an initial failed tender and a budget increase from the original 229,000 euros, construction finally restarted in February 2025 with a six-month completion goal. The project aims to modernize the building, including updates to the roof, flooring, and exterior, along with new sports equipment.
While Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez’s administration emphasizes the importance of the center for the Anaga community, local frustration is growing. Neighborhood groups, including "Voz del Valle" and the Anaga Sociocultural Center, have criticized the management of the project, noting that residents have been without a functional sports space for nearly six years. In the meantime, the contractor, Sermarher, is responsible for keeping the site secure while work remains suspended.
