Taganana's Last Bakery to Close, Ending 100-Year Tradition
The closure of Taganana's century-old bakery, famous for its traditional sweet cake, marks the end of an era as baker Domingo Morín retires.
The village of Taganana is getting ready to say goodbye to a big part of its history. Its only bakery, famous for its traditional sweet cake, will close in the next six months. This is happening because the baker, Domingo Morín, is retiring after keeping this traditional craft going for decades.
This closure means the end of a tradition that's over a hundred years old and deeply connected to Taganana life. "It stops with me; my children don't want to work in the bakery," Domingo admitted in a report on RTVC's Ponte al día. He also shared that his job has been "sacrifice day after day."
Besides baking bread and those special sweet cakes, Domingo has also spent years delivering fresh bread every morning to homes in Taganana and nearby areas. Soon, the familiar sound of his deliveries won't be heard anymore through the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz neighborhood.
News of his retirement has made residents feel nostalgic and worried. They know that when he leaves, a piece of the village's food culture and identity will vanish.
When the bakery closes, Taganana will lose the smell of fresh bread and one of its most cherished traditions: the sweet cake that has been a part of residents' lives for generations.
