Tacoronte Opposition Demands Comprehensive Strategy for Coastal Infrastructure and Safety

Source: El Día

The Sí se puede party in Tacoronte is demanding a comprehensive, year-round maintenance and mobility plan to address deteriorating coastal infrastructure and persistent safety hazards for pedestrians and commuters.

Coastal management in Tacoronte has returned to the forefront of local political debate. José Almenara, a councilor for the Sí se puede party, has raised concerns over the deteriorating state of the infrastructure connecting the town center to the coast. He argues that the local government’s lack of a consistent maintenance strategy has allowed these issues to become chronic.

The opposition points to the vulnerability of the main access road, where heavy construction machinery and regular traffic now share the same space, creating a dangerous environment. This risk is compounded by a lack of pedestrian paths, forcing people to walk along the road—a major safety hazard, particularly during the busy summer months.

Beyond road safety, Sí se puede highlights a failure in sustainable mobility. Public transport is infrequent, with wait times reaching up to two hours. The party argues that this prevents fair access to the coast for those without private vehicles, contradicting the principles of accessibility that should apply to such a valuable natural landscape.

The party is calling for more than just temporary fixes. They are demanding a comprehensive, year-round plan, including a major renovation of the tunnel leading to La Arena beach and the stabilization of the surrounding cliffs, which are currently showing clear signs of decay.

Almenara has urged the local government to coordinate with other authorities to establish a permanent maintenance schedule and improve public services. The goal is to move beyond seasonal repairs and ensure the Tacoronte coastline is protected and accessible throughout the entire year.
