Tacoronte Launches €375,000 Project to Stabilize Mesa del Mar Slope
Tacoronte has launched a 375,000-euro project to stabilize the Mesa del Mar slope and mitigate long-standing landslide risks near the local pier.
Geological safety on the Tacoronte coastline is back on the municipal agenda following the signing of a contract to stabilize the Mesa del Mar slope. The City Council says the project is necessary to reduce the risk of landslides in an area with a complex landscape and a 60-year history of instability.
The four-month project will cost 375,000 euros, funded entirely by the local government. Engineers aim to secure the area above the pier, which is considered highly vulnerable due to unstable volcanic rock. The work will involve filling cavities with concrete, building reinforcement structures, and installing anchors to hold the hillside in place.
This project follows the 2015 Maintenance and Safety Measures Plan, which aims to improve coastal inspections and protection. Because the site is a protected cultural and natural heritage area—known as "Los Acantilados de Tacoronte y el Barranco de Guayonge"—the work must follow strict environmental protocols to protect the landscape.
These repairs continue stabilization efforts that began in the late 1990s, when the Tenerife Coastal Authority first reinforced the tunnel and pier area. The current local government coalition emphasizes that this investment is essential to keep La Arena beach safe, noting that the area’s natural geology requires ongoing monitoring and maintenance.
