Tacoronte Heritage Crisis: Abandoned Wrestling Arena Faces Collapse Amid Stalled Renovation

The former wrestling arena in Tacoronte’s La Luz neighborhood remains abandoned and structurally unstable, four years after a planned 1.3 million euro renovation project stalled.

Public heritage management in Tacoronte is facing a crisis, highlighted by the crumbling state of the former wrestling arena in the La Luz neighborhood. As reported by El Día, the building—which was slated for a 1.3 million euro transformation into a multifunctional center in 2022—now sits abandoned and requires structural shoring to prevent collapse.

The project, launched by the previous administration, aimed to convert the space to host karate, judo, and boxing, while still serving as a home for Canarian wrestling. Four years later, however, no work has been done. This administrative standstill is particularly striking given the municipality's current financial health; the 2026 budget is set to exceed 30 million euros, bolstered by nearly five million euros in recent credit modifications.

Local residents are frustrated. Neighbors like Yaiza Rodríguez and Juan Manuel González point out that the lack of sports facilities for local youth is a major issue. They argue that the building's decay not only deprives the community of a vital service but also threatens the future of traditional island sports.

The opposition group, Somos Tacoronte, has accused the current tripartite government (PSOE-CC-PP) of neglecting municipal heritage. Spokesperson Carlos Medina criticized the absence of funding for the arena in the current budget, claiming the local government is prioritizing institutional advertising over the repair of public infrastructure.

Despite repeated requests for comment regarding the project's status, the municipal government has remained silent. In the meantime, the Piedra de Torres facility continues to deteriorate, serving as a symbol of broken promises and a management approach that has left the residents of La Luz without the sports and social center they were promised.
