Taburiente Celebrates 50 Years of Canarian Music at La Laguna Concert
Canarian musical icons Taburiente will celebrate their 50th anniversary this Friday with a commemorative concert at the Leal Theatre in La Laguna.
Taburiente is more than just a successful band; they are a cornerstone of the Canary Islands' musical identity. This Friday, the group will celebrate 50 years of continuous music-making with a concert titled 50 years and +, starting at 8:30 p.m. at the Leal Theatre in La Laguna.
The anniversary offers a chance to look back at how the group has evolved since Luis Morera, Miguel Pérez, and Manolo Pérez formed the band in 1974. They quickly developed a unique sound, becoming leaders of the "New Canarian Song" movement by blending traditional folk music with singer-songwriter styles and global influences. Their early work in the late 1970s broke away from established norms and changed the islands' cultural landscape forever.
Their music has constantly evolved. In the 1980s, with the addition of Luisa Machado and Alberto Méndez, the band began exploring North African rhythms and themes of environmentalism and peace. Albums like A Tara and Atlántico showed that the group could adapt to changing times while staying true to their roots.
Although they released fewer albums after 1991’s Astral, Taburiente has remained a powerful live act under Morera’s leadership. The setlist for the La Laguna concert—featuring classics like A la Caldera and Ach-Guañac—serves as a living record of Canarian history, highlighting the group's lifelong dedication to the natural and cultural heritage that has defined their work for five decades.
