A coordinated rescue effort successfully saved a swimmer in distress off the coast of Arona, Tenerife. According to the Canary Islands’ 112 emergency service, the rescue at Las Ballenas beach required a maritime operation because the difficult terrain made it impossible to reach the swimmer from the shore.
Two firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium joined a lifeguard already in the water, working together to keep the swimmer afloat until further help arrived. The group was eventually picked up by the Salvamar Alpheratz rescue vessel and taken to the port of Los Cristianos.
Once back on land, the swimmer was assessed by medical teams. Fortunately, they only suffered minor issues and did not require hospital treatment.
This incident highlights the vital role of teamwork between local and regional emergency services. In areas where rugged coastlines and strong currents pose a constant risk, the ability of lifeguards and specialized rescue teams to work together is essential for preventing tragedies.
