Supreme Court Upholds Life Sentence for Thomas Handrick in Tenerife Double Murder Case
The Spanish Supreme Court has upheld a life sentence for Thomas Handrick, who was convicted of murdering his wife and son in a premeditated act of vicarious violence in Tenerife in 2019.
In 2023, the Supreme Court’s final ruling against Thomas Handrick brought a legal end to one of Spain’s most harrowing cases of vicarious violence. Handrick was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of review, plus an additional 39 years, for the crimes he committed in April 2019 in Adeje, Tenerife.
Investigations and the subsequent trial in Santa Cruz de Tenerife revealed that the attack was not a spontaneous act, but a carefully planned crime. While in the process of separating from his wife, Handrick lured his family to a mountainous area under the guise of searching for Easter gifts. Once inside a cave, he used a large stone to kill his wife and their ten-year-old son.
The case against Handrick was built on the survival of his youngest son, then six years old. After escaping his father, the boy navigated rugged terrain for hours before being found by a Dutch tourist, whose help led to the intervention of the authorities. The child’s testimony, combined with expert evidence, allowed investigators to dismiss the defense’s claims that the attacker suffered from psychological disorders or substance abuse.
The jury concluded that Handrick had exploited his family’s trust to carry out the attack. The sentence, originally delivered by Judge Fernando Paredes and later upheld by both the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands and the Supreme Court, confirmed the convictions for two murders and one attempted murder. The case serves as a significant legal precedent, highlighting the severity of using violence against children as a means to inflict pain on a partner.
