The stage adaptation of Meryem El Mehdati’s novel Supersaurio, a pop musical exploring youth job insecurity, arrives at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on May 1st following a successful run in Las Palmas.

The stage adaptation of the novel Supersaurio is heading to the Canary Islands, with its first show scheduled for May 1st at 8:00 p.m. at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. This follows a sold-out run at the Teatro Cuyás in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on March 6th.

Produced by Ángulo Producciones and directed by Rosa Escrig, the show transforms Meryem El Mehdati’s debut novel into a modern pop musical. Published by Blackie Books, the original book has been a major success, now in its fourth printing and translated for readers in the UK, Germany, and the United States.

The play offers a sharp look at job insecurity and the struggles of today’s youth. Using a mix of trap, electro-pop, and indie music, the production employs irony and a kitsch aesthetic to explore the pressures of economic instability. The cast—Delia Santana, Mingo Ávila, Alexia Rodríguez, Abraham Santacruz, and Lucía Viera Ruano—tells the story of a 25-year-old woman of Moroccan origin raised in Mogán. Her life is a balancing act between the demands of a retail job and finding her own path while navigating the unique pace of island life.

This production highlights how Canarian literature is reaching audiences far beyond its home, while using the performing arts to give voice to generational frustrations. Ultimately, the play serves as a defiant, humorous, and musical critique of the traditional definitions of success in modern society.
