"Sugar Island" won in Puerto Rico, "Black Butterflies" – in Rome
The film "Sugar Island" was recognized as the best foreign film at the Puerto Rico Film Festival, and "Black Butterflies" received two awards at the International Environmental Film Festival in Rome.
"Sugar Island," directed by Johanna Gómez Terrero, was recognized as the best foreign film at the 16th Puerto Rico Film Festival. This is the main film event in the Caribbean, which took place in the city of Mayagüez.
This film, created by Tinglado Film and Guasabara Producciones, tells the story of colonialism, injustice in society, and spiritual revival in one community. The film made a big impression, and recently the president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts of the Dominican Republic, Luis Arambilet, announced that "Sugar Island" has become the country's official selection. This means that the film will represent the Dominican Republic at the Goya Awards in the category of "Best Ibero-American Film."
And another film, "Black Butterflies" (Mariposas Negras) by a director from the Canary Islands, David Baute, won at the International Environmental Film Festival in Rome. It received two important awards at once: the Jury Prize and the Audience Award.
The screenwriter of the film, Yaiza Berrocal, emphasized at the gala concert that "Black Butterflies" is a symbol of the tragic situation when people are forced to leave their homes due to climate change. She added that international law must urgently recognize this problem.
