Studio Ghibli has been awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The foundation’s decision marks a historic moment, recognizing animation not just as entertainment, but as a significant force in modern thought. The jury, led by Miguel Falomir, praised the Japanese studio for its technical mastery and its commitment to themes like peaceful coexistence, pacifism, and environmental conservation.

Founded in June 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, the studio is known for its meticulous craftsmanship and artistic vision. While Ghibli is best known for its iconic films, its influence extends far beyond cinema, including work in advertising and video games. This versatility helped the studio build its reputation following the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, released just before the studio was officially established.

This is the second of eight awards to be announced in the 46th edition of the Princess of Asturias honors. Ghibli was chosen from 48 candidates across 20 countries, highlighting the rising global influence of Asian culture in the humanities. The jury specifically noted that Ghibli’s artisanal approach allows them to tell stories that go beyond simple fiction, promoting values of human dignity and solidarity that have made the studio a leading cultural force in the 21st century.
