Students Promote Sustainable Travel by Riding All 187 Tenerife Bus Routes

Two university students are on a mission to promote sustainable travel in the Canary Islands by riding every single interurban bus route in Tenerife within a year. Nayara and Lucía, who are studying Mathematics and Education, have set out to complete all 187 routes operated by the public transport company, Titsa. Their project, "Guagüeando por Tenerife," is more than just a personal challenge; it serves as a detailed look at how the island is connected.

Through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, the pair shares practical information about the bus network, including schedules, connections between towns, and local cultural recommendations. Their content has resonated quickly with the public, with some videos gaining over 90,000 views in less than a month. This success highlights a growing interest in using public transport to get around the island.

The Tenerife Island Council has taken notice of their work, recently inviting the students to the launch of the island’s new double-decker buses. These vehicles, which begin service on July 27, will increase capacity on key routes connecting Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz.

As the islands work toward reducing carbon emissions and reliance on private cars, this project has become particularly relevant. By documenting their journeys, Nayara and Lucía are providing a practical guide that makes it easier for people to reach rural and peripheral areas, ultimately encouraging a more accessible and integrated transport system for everyone.
