A sinkhole caused by Storm Therese has forced authorities in El Rosario, Tenerife, to restrict traffic on the Costa Caricia road while emergency repairs are underway.

Tenerife’s road network has once again shown its vulnerability to bad weather. Early Friday morning, Storm Therese caused a sinkhole on the Costa Caricia road, forcing local authorities in El Rosario to restrict traffic heading toward Bocacangrejo.

The damage was discovered around 5:00 a.m., making the southbound lane unusable. Mayor Escolástico Gil coordinated an emergency response, closing the main access to Bocacangrejo and Playa La Nea. Currently, only local residents and light vehicles under 3.5 tons are permitted to pass. A temporary detour has been set up through Radazul while engineers assess the structural damage.

This incident is part of a wider period of instability across the island, with heavy rain keeping emergency services busy throughout the metropolitan area. The situation highlights the challenges of maintaining roads in coastal areas with difficult terrain, where heavy rainfall often leads to erosion and ground instability.

Crews are working to repair the road, and the city council is urging the public to follow all temporary signage and instructions from the Local Police and Civil Protection. The road will remain closed until technical reports confirm it is safe for travel, as officials continue to monitor the area for further damage while the storm persists.
