Storm Therese Triggers Emergency Response and Road Closures in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Storm Therese has triggered widespread disruption across Santa Cruz de Tenerife, forcing emergency services to manage landslides, road closures, and high-risk rescues as the municipality remains on high alert.
Storm Therese has put emergency services in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to the test, with the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) proving vital in managing over 30 incidents since midnight. According to the local Operational Coordination Center (Cecopal), the heavy rain and strong winds required a major response, involving nearly 40 local police officers and 20 civil protection staff.
The Anaga massif was hit particularly hard. Landslides have left the TF-134 road impassable past the Taganana tunnel, while falling rocks have affected the TF-12 and the route between Benijo and Roque de Las Bodegas. These closures highlight the vulnerability of roads in steep areas during heavy rain, with Cabildo de Tenerife maintenance crews currently working to clear and secure the routes.
Beyond clearing fallen trees and branches from areas like Avenida Bravo Murillo, Avenida Constitución, and San Andrés, emergency teams carried out a high-risk rescue in the Tahodio ravine. Firefighters, civil protection, and local police successfully evacuated three homeless individuals who were sleeping under a bridge. After initially refusing to leave, the group was moved to the temporary shelter at Casa Cuna, underscoring the social challenges that arise during severe weather.
This storm has once again highlighted the importance of coordination between local authorities and emergency services in managing risks across the municipality’s complex terrain. With the weather alert still in place, teams remain on high alert to ensure public safety following a morning of intense operational activity.
