Storm Therese Triggers Coastal Road Closures Across Northwest Tenerife

Storm Therese has prompted authorities in northwest Tenerife to close coastal roads and restrict travel due to dangerous waves damaging infrastructure in Garachico, Los Silos, and San Juan de la Rambla.

Storm Therese has triggered a weather alert in northwest Tenerife, leading local authorities to restrict travel due to dangerous waves. High tides have forced the preventive closure of several coastal roads in Garachico, Los Silos, and San Juan de la Rambla.

In Garachico, traffic is being diverted through the town’s historic center. The decision followed a mid-morning incident where waves reached the TF-42 road and destroyed protective fencing. By early afternoon, the seafront avenue was closed entirely. Mayor Heriberto González has urged residents to remain extremely cautious while the storm continues.

In nearby Los Silos, police have closed the road between Sibora and La Caleta de Interián because the crashing waves make driving unsafe. Meanwhile, in San Juan de la Rambla, the sea has damaged the promenade in the Las Aguas neighborhood. Both vehicle and pedestrian access have been blocked after parts of the railing were broken by the surf.

These storms highlight the vulnerability of coastal infrastructure in the Canary Islands. The frequent need to reroute traffic through town centers—which are often not designed for high volumes of vehicles—underscores the urgent need for better urban planning and coordinated safety protocols to keep these regions connected during severe weather.
