Storm Therese Floods Coastal Tenerife, Exposing Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

Storm Therese caused significant flooding and debris damage in Tenerife’s coastal areas of El Pris and Mesa del Mar, prompting emergency rescues and renewed concerns over the island's infrastructure resilience.

Storm Therese has once again highlighted how vulnerable the Canary Islands' infrastructure is to extreme weather. According to the Tacoronte City Council, the coastal areas of El Pris and Mesa del Mar were hit hardest by heavy rainfall last night, forcing an immediate emergency response.

The area’s steep terrain acted like a funnel, sending water, mud, and debris rushing toward the coast with significant force. The Marisol building in Mesa del Mar was particularly affected, as the sheer pressure of the water overwhelmed its defenses, flooding ground-floor entrances and units.

Tenerife’s fire department and local police worked for hours to rescue residents trapped in their homes and clear water from garages and common areas. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

This incident underscores a long-standing issue with urban planning on the islands: coastal settlements are often ill-equipped to handle sudden, intense rainfall. The ground’s inability to absorb the water, combined with limited drainage systems, creates dangerous conditions. As municipal crews continue to clean up and assess the damage, the city council is urging residents to remain cautious while unstable weather persists in northern Tenerife.
