Storm Therese Disrupts Rural Infrastructure in La Orotava
Heavy rainfall from Storm Therese caused significant travel disruptions and blocked access routes in La Orotava, Tenerife, renewing calls for improved rural infrastructure and flood management.
Storm Therese has once again exposed the vulnerability of rural infrastructure in La Orotava, Tenerife. According to El Día, heavy rainfall between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning caused significant travel disruptions in the La Florida neighborhood, where rising water levels blocked local routes.
The storm highlighted how fragile local roads are during heavy downpours. At the La Hondura ravine, runoff reshaped the terrain, making it impossible for vehicles to pass and cutting off access to local farms. A similar situation occurred near the Quiquirá ravine, where the force of the water trapped residents in their homes during the peak of the storm.
These incidents point to a clear need for better maintenance of water channels and more resilient access roads in areas with difficult terrain. Fortunately, there were no injuries or vehicle losses, as many residents wisely parked near the Las Dehesas Health Center and walked the rest of the way. However, the event caused recurring logistical headaches, requiring cleanup crews to clear mud and stones from the Camino de Chasna.
While water levels began to drop by Wednesday afternoon, allowing life to return to normal, the storm has reignited the debate over how the island manages such risks. With steep landscapes and increasingly unpredictable weather, there is a growing call for better planning to ensure rural communities stay connected and that essential services and local businesses are not repeatedly brought to a standstill.
