Storm Therese has caused widespread power outages and travel disruptions across the Canary Islands, with emergency crews working to clear landslides and restore electricity as weather conditions permit.

Storm Therese has put the Canary Islands' infrastructure to the test, causing power outages and travel disruptions that local authorities are now working to resolve. According to Televisión Canaria, emergency teams have been deployed to clear blocked roads and restore electricity.

Travel remains difficult, though the TF-134 road to Almáciga has partially reopened following landslides. Access is still restricted, however, as rocks inside the El Bailadero tunnel are preventing large vehicles from passing. Rosa Dávila, President of the Tenerife Island Council, has urged residents to avoid all non-essential travel while the weather alert remains in place.

Power restoration is also proving challenging. While estimates of the number of affected households vary, hundreds of people in Tenerife—specifically in Adeje, Guía de Isora, and Fasnia—as well as in Gran Canaria’s Guía and Gáldar municipalities, are still without electricity. The utility company, Endesa, explained that strong winds are making it too dangerous for crews to perform repairs at heights. Despite these setbacks, Blanca Pérez, the Councilor for Security and Emergencies, expects power to be fully restored by midday today.

This storm highlights how vulnerable island infrastructure can be to extreme weather, where difficult terrain and high winds often complicate maintenance and repairs. Moving forward, close coordination between local government and utility providers remains essential to minimizing the impact on residents.
