Storm Therese Disrupts Holy Week Processions in Tenerife
Storm Therese has forced the cancellation and modification of several Holy Week processions and events across Tenerife as brotherhoods scramble to protect historic religious icons from heavy rain.
Storm Therese has disrupted the start of Holy Week events in Tenerife, forcing local brotherhoods to change their plans due to the threat of rain. According to El Día, the bad weather led to the cancellation of the joint Stations of the Cross in Santa Cruz’s García Sanabria Park and forced changes to processions in La Laguna.
In La Laguna, the procession for the Most Holy Christ of the Rescue—a historic 1558 carving—had to shorten its route. While the brotherhood initially considered keeping the event inside the church, a brief break in the weather allowed for a short parade. However, they had to return quickly to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción as the rain returned. Other groups, such as the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Burgos and Our Lady of the Ribbon, also faced uncertainty, waiting until the last minute to decide whether to proceed based on guidance from the Board of Brotherhoods and Confraternities (JHC).
Despite these weather setbacks, the schedule in La Laguna is now intensifying. JHC president Juan Antonio Pérez confirmed that the opening proclamation, which was postponed last Thursday, will take place tonight at the Santo Domingo de Guzmán parish, delivered by priest Juan Antonio Guedes. Other upcoming events include a painting exhibition at Casa Mesa, running until April 5, and a concert by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra at the Cathedral this Thursday.
Managing these events is a logistical challenge, as brotherhoods must protect their historic and sacred images from the elements. There is significant anticipation surrounding this year’s events, not only because Holy Week is approaching, but also due to the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV, a historic moment for the island.
