Storm Therese Damages Tenerife Water Infrastructure, Prompting Urgent Repairs
Crews in Tenerife are working to repair a burst pipe in Los Silos caused by Storm Therese, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of the island's aging water infrastructure.
Recent storms have once again highlighted the fragility of Tenerife’s water infrastructure. On Saturday, crews from the public water company, Balten, were sent to Los Silos to repair a burst pipe caused by Storm Therese, which has brought severe weather to the islands since mid-week.
Blanca Pérez, the Minister of Natural Environment and Emergencies, identified the repair as the most significant challenge managed by the Island Emergency Coordination Center over the past 24 hours. The primary goal for the repair teams is to ensure a steady water supply and prevent long-term outages for local residents.
This incident underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Tenerife’s water network. Due to the island's volcanic terrain and aging infrastructure, heavy rain and strong winds frequently cause structural damage. Managing these water resources remains a critical priority for the island, as any disruption affects both households and local agriculture—particularly in the north, where the rugged landscape makes maintenance difficult.
