Storm Therese Causes Significant Damage to Tenerife Coastal Infrastructure
Storm Therese has caused significant damage to coastal infrastructure in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, prompting local authorities to close affected areas while repair efforts are underway.
Storm Therese has caused significant damage to popular coastal areas in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, putting local infrastructure to the test. Following the overnight storm, the local council has sent a team to assess the damage at Jóver, Bajamar, and Punta del Hidalgo.
The Department of Works and Infrastructure reports that powerful waves have damaged access points and public facilities. Technicians found that pavement around the pools has broken away, safety fencing has been destroyed, and several sets of stairs leading to the sea have been damaged. Ángel Chinea, the councilor in charge, confirmed that crews are already clearing debris and planning the repairs needed to get these areas back to normal.
Severe weather is common on Tenerife’s north coast, making it a constant challenge for the local government. While the council has a regular maintenance plan in place, the intensity of this storm may lead them to increase repair efforts to ensure everything is ready for the upcoming Easter holidays. The councilor emphasized that public safety is the top priority, and the areas will only reopen once all structures are confirmed to be stable.
As the storm continues, the City Council is urging the public to stay away from the coast and respect all access restrictions. The combination of high winds, rain, and rough seas makes these areas dangerous. They will remain closed until experts confirm it is safe for the public to return. The council is working to repair the damage as quickly as possible, aiming to have these spaces fully operational before the holiday period.
