Storm Therese Causes Major Disruptions to Tenerife Tram Service
Tenerife’s tram service experienced 30-minute delays on Wednesday after Storm Therese created slippery track conditions, coinciding with widespread weather alerts across the Canary Islands.
Tenerife’s tram service faced significant disruptions on Wednesday morning, according to the operator, Metrotenerife. The delays, which reached up to 30 minutes in some areas, were caused by a combination of bad weather and recent maintenance work.
The issue began when moisture from Storm Therese mixed with plant debris left over from mowing work the previous day. This created a slippery film on the tracks, causing the trams to lose traction. The problem was most severe on uphill sections, particularly for passengers traveling toward La Laguna.
This disruption comes as the Canary Islands remain under widespread weather alerts. Storm Therese has impacted more than just public transport; authorities have also closed access to Teide National Park and canceled several outdoor events as a precaution. The incident highlights the challenges of keeping an outdoor transport system running smoothly during unpredictable weather.
