Spanish Theaters Diversify Lineup With New Releases and Classic Re-runs
Spanish cinemas are diversifying their offerings this week with a mix of high-profile local dramas, international blockbusters, experimental indie projects, and the 25th-anniversary re-release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
The Spanish box office is seeing a wider variety of films this week, as theaters try to win back audiences by balancing local dramas, big-budget international hits, and nostalgic favorites.
The biggest draw is Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new family drama, El ser querido. Fresh from a successful debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the film stars Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo. Co-written by Isabel Peña, the story uses the landscapes of Fuerteventura to recreate the Spanish Sahara of the 1930s, focusing on themes of memory and family.
For families, Enrique Gato returns with the fourth installment of the Tadeo Jones series, Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa. Featuring the voices of Carlos Latre, Luis Posada, and Michelle Jenner, the adventure moves from London to the Middle East and Greece, adding a touch of fantasy to the mix. Meanwhile, sci-fi fans can look forward to Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars. Based on Peter Heller’s novel and starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, the film is a gritty look at survival in a dystopian world.
The lineup also includes a mix of independent and commercial projects. Director Will Gluck brings us the New York-based romantic comedy One Night a Year, starring Mónica Barbaro and Callum Turner. On the more experimental side, Erupcja—a low-budget, improvised film directed by Pete Ohs and filmed in Warsaw—marks the acting debut of artist Charli XCX.
