The Spanish Olympic Committee has launched a new sustainability roadmap for sports organizations, providing digital tools to measure environmental impact alongside tax incentives to encourage private investment.

The Spanish sports sector has taken a major step toward sustainability following a recent meeting in Tenerife, where the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) unveiled a new roadmap for clubs and federations. The event introduced a suite of digital tools and certifications designed to help sports organizations manage their environmental impact more professionally.

Supported by the High Council for Sports, this initiative focuses on measuring and reducing environmental footprints. Key resources include a carbon footprint calculator—developed with the International Olympic Committee and verified by Bureau Veritas—which helps organizers track emissions and plan reduction strategies. The package also features a new certification system for sustainable events and the "MOES" platform, which uses challenges and incentives to encourage positive social and environmental action.

The event also addressed the need for more diverse funding in sports. The Young Sports Foundation highlighted the benefits of public-private partnerships, such as the "España Compite" program and Events of Exceptional Public Interest (AEIP). These programs offer companies tax incentives of up to 90% on their investments, making it easier for clubs and athletes to secure private funding.

Tenerife was chosen as the host to highlight the unique opportunity for the Canary Islands. Local government and industry leaders emphasized that balancing environmental protection with business growth is essential for the region’s future. By adopting these standards, local sports organizations can turn sustainability into a competitive advantage.

This initiative reflects a global shift as sports organizations face increasing pressure to justify their environmental impact. By providing practical tools and attractive financial incentives, the COE aims to move sustainability from an abstract goal to a core business practice, ensuring that sports organizations remain viable and attractive to investors in the coming decade.
