Spanish cinemas are kicking off February with a diverse lineup of new films. This month features many Spanish productions, offering everything from intense dramas to action and horror, plus family movies and musical events.
One of the highlights is La fiera (The Beast), the latest from Goya Award-winning Spanish director Salvador Calvo, known for 1898: Our Last Men in the Philippines. Starring Carlos Cuevas, Miguel Bernardeau, and Miguel Ángel Silvestre, this film is based on a true story. It follows the journey of Spain's pioneering wing-suit base jumpers, referencing real figures like Álvaro Bultó (who died in 2013), Darío Barrio (who had a fatal accident in 2014), Carlos Suárez (who died during filming last year), and Armando del Rey, the only survivor of the group.
Also premiering is Tres adioses (Three Farewells) from director Isabel Coixet, a co-production between Spain and Italy. This film is based on the novel Tres cuencos (Three Bowls) by writer and activist Michela Murgia. It stars Alba Rohrwacher and Elio Germano, exploring pivotal moments that change people's lives.
On the international front, Hellboy: The Crooked Man finally arrives, quite a bit later than its worldwide release. This fourth movie in the saga, based on Mike Mignola's character, is directed by Brian Taylor and takes place in the 1950s. Jack Kesy plays Hellboy, who teams up with a new agent from the AIDP (Paranormal Investigation and Defense Agency) to investigate a mystery in a rural town filled with witches and the ominous Crooked Man.
For horror fans, there's Primate, the latest from British director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night). Co-written with Spanish writer Ernest Riera, the film blends a polished look with B-movie vibes, using practical effects and animatronics. It tells the story of friends on a tropical holiday who find themselves fighting for their lives during a violent and unexpected family reunion.
Families have two animated movies to choose from. Evolution, directed by Julio Soto Gúrpide and Zayra Muñoz Domínguez, is a comedic adventure about humans and animals swapping roles. The story kicks off when an alien substance mixes Zoe's DNA with her pets', leading to a mission to save Earth. The ambitious Chinese film Xana y el secreto del tiempo (Xana and the Secret of Time), set in the 1930s, follows Qian Xiao, a young woman from a fishing village who finds a powerful device, drawing the attention of a formidable organization.
Another notable debut is La tarta del presidente (The President's Cake), the first feature film from Iraqi writer-director Hasan Hadi. This moving story, set in Iraq in the 1990s, won the Caméra d'Or for best debut and the Audience Award at Cannes 2025's Directors' Fortnight. It follows young Lamia, her friend Saeed, and her rooster Hindi on an adventure through Baghdad as they search for ingredients for Saddam Hussein's birthday cake.
Finally, K-pop fans can catch Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience. This concert film features live performances, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with the band members.
