Spanish Cinemas Refresh Lineups with Diverse New Releases

Spanish cinemas are refreshing their lineups this Friday with a variety of new releases, ranging from nostalgic sequels to psychological thrillers and independent films. The goal is to draw a wider audience back to theaters by offering something for everyone, whether you are looking for family entertainment or a thought-provoking drama.

Leading the sequels is Practical Magic 2, directed by Susanne Bier. Nearly 30 years after the original, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as the Owens sisters. They are joined by newcomers Joey King and Maisie Williams in a story that continues to explore the family’s magical legacy.

Spanish cinema is also well-represented with two contrasting films. Un plan perfecto, directed by María Pulido, is a comedy starring Jordi Sánchez, Leo Harlem, Raquel Guerrero, and Ernesto Sevilla as a family in financial trouble who attempt to rob a bank. In a darker tone, Hugo Stuven’s psychological thriller El nido features Michelle Jenner, Luisa Gavasa, Pablo Derqui, and Dylan Radley in a tense story about a mother who isolates her family.

The international lineup includes the thriller Mother’s Baby, directed by Johanna Moder. Having already appeared at the Berlinale and the Isla Calavera Fantastic Film Festival, the film follows an orchestra conductor dealing with the anxieties of a fertility journey. For those interested in experimental cinema, Carlos Saiz’s debut Lionel uses autofiction to tell the story of a real family recreating their own road trip from Murcia to France, set to a modern soundtrack.

Finally, anime fans can look forward to the 29th Detective Conan film, The Fallen Angel of the Road. Created by Gosho Aoyama, this latest installment follows the characters through a mystery set between Yokohama and Tokyo. It will be available in its original version with subtitles.
