The haul, totaling 3,361 kilograms packed into 139 bales, was found on a Panamanian-flagged ship near the Canary Islands. Beyond removing a massive amount of drugs from the streets, the operation led to the arrest of all eight crew members. They have been moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to face the National Court, where they will be processed for drug trafficking and organized crime charges.
Operations like this are essential for breaking up distribution networks that use the Atlantic as a gateway. In this instance, smugglers used a tugboat to disguise their large shipment as routine commercial traffic. The case is now in the hands of a National Court judge, who will oversee the legal proceedings and work to trace the shipment back to the organizers on land.
