Spanish Authorities Launch Tunnel Safety Crackdown Amid Stricter Overtaking Rules

The Civil Guard and the DGT have launched a new surveillance campaign to enforce strict overtaking regulations in tunnels and underpasses, where violations can result in 600-euro fines and the loss of six license points.

The Civil Guard and the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) have launched a new surveillance campaign to improve safety in tunnels and underpasses. Authorities are focusing on these areas because their narrow lanes and limited visibility significantly increase the risk of accidents.

Under current traffic regulations, overtaking is strictly prohibited in tunnels, underpasses, or sections marked with the S-5 sign if there is only one lane in your direction. This rule exists because there is very little room for error in these enclosed spaces.

There is one exception: you may overtake in a tunnel only if there are multiple lanes in your direction and you do not cross into the lane for oncoming traffic. To do this legally, you must signal your intention early, ensure you have enough space and visibility, and stay within the speed limit, which is typically 80 km/h. These rules apply to all drivers, including motorcyclists.

Breaking these rules is considered a serious offense. If you overtake improperly in a tunnel—especially if you cross into the opposite lane or endanger others—you face a 600-euro fine and the loss of 6 points from your license.

Beyond the fines, authorities are urging drivers to stay alert. Driving in tunnels is more dangerous than many realize, and the current crackdown is intended to prevent risky behavior in environments where your ability to react to an emergency is naturally limited.
