Spanish Authorities Intercept Cocaine Chemically Impregnated in Pillow at Huelva Port
Spanish authorities intercepted a shipment of cocaine chemically impregnated into a pillow at the Port of Huelva, leading to the arrest of one individual.
Drug traffickers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to hide narcotics, as shown by a recent bust at the Port of Huelva. The Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance Service intercepted a shipment of cocaine arriving on a ferry from the Canary Islands.
The discovery was made on August 21 during a routine customs inspection. Security forces found that the cocaine had been chemically impregnated into the fibers of a pillow. The drug was detected by a specialized canine unit from the Huelva Command, which flagged the item because of its unusual weight and damp texture.
This "impregnation" technique is designed to bypass standard visual and physical security checks. Traffickers use this method with the intention of later using chemical processes to extract the cocaine and return it to its solid form. After the discovery, officers performed a narcotest, which confirmed the presence of the drug.
The person responsible for transporting the pillow has been taken into custody and is currently awaiting trial for an alleged crime against public health. This case highlights the ongoing challenge of monitoring maritime routes between the islands and the mainland. Due to the high volume of traffic, authorities must constantly adapt their detection methods to keep pace with the evolving tactics used by smugglers.
