Spain’s World Cup Win Highlights Regional Tax Disparities for National Team Players

Spain’s recent World Cup victory at MetLife Stadium in New York is more than just a sporting milestone; it has also put a spotlight on the complex tax rules facing elite athletes. According to Europa Press, the success of Luis de la Fuente’s team will significantly boost public funds, with the Tax Agency expected to collect nearly six million euros from the bonuses of the 17 players who pay taxes in Spain.

The situation of midfielder Pedri illustrates how this works. As part of the team, he is set to receive a gross bonus of nearly 754,700 euros, which comes from the 45% share of FIFA’s 50-million-dollar prize pool awarded to the Royal Spanish Football Federation. However, the final amount he takes home depends heavily on where he lives. Because Pedri is a tax resident in Catalonia, he faces a top-tier tax rate of about 50.14%. This means roughly 378,700 euros will go to the tax authorities, leaving him with a net total of approximately 376,300 euros.

This creates notable differences among teammates. Players based in Catalonia—such as Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Joan García, and goal-scorer Ferrán Torres—all face the same Catalan tax rates. Meanwhile, teammates who pay taxes in the Community of Madrid, such as Marcos Llorente, Álex Baena, and Marc Pubill, will pay about 38,000 euros less in taxes due to regional differences.

Beyond the finances, this victory marks another achievement for the young Pedri, who has now won a European Championship, a Nations League, and a World Cup. The prize money from FIFA also saw a 19% increase compared to the 2022 tournament, with an extra 1.5 million dollars provided to help cover the team's logistics and preparation. Ultimately, these figures highlight how an athlete’s place of residence plays a decisive role in determining their actual earnings from sporting success.
