Spain’s DGT Warns of Record Summer Traffic and Strict ITV Inspections

Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) expects a record-breaking summer, with over 104 million trips predicted across the country’s roads throughout July and August. To manage this surge, authorities are stepping up vehicle inspections, reminding drivers that proper maintenance and valid paperwork are essential for road safety.

A key priority for traffic officers is ensuring all vehicles have passed their mandatory Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV). Generally, cars and motorcycles must undergo their first inspection when they reach four years of age. For 2024, officers are specifically checking vehicles with license plates between the series LVV and MDF. Drivers are urged to ensure their inspections are up to date to avoid fines or, in serious cases, having their vehicle immobilized.

Traffic laws are strict regarding the documents drivers must carry. Driving with an expired inspection—even if you have an appointment booked—will result in a €200 fine. If you drive with an "unfavorable" inspection result, which authorities view as a significant safety risk, the fine increases to €500. Additionally, failing to display the V-19 sticker in the top right corner of your windshield is a minor offense that carries a €100 penalty.

These checks are designed to reduce accidents during a period when vehicles are under extra strain. While there are some exceptions based on vehicle age or type, most drivers must complete the ITV process. It remains a vital safeguard to ensure that all vehicles on the road meet the minimum safety and mechanical standards.
