Spain’s DGT Warns Against Dangerous Dashboard Habit Ahead of Summer Travel Surge

Spain’s DGT is warning passengers that resting feet on the dashboard during summer travel is both illegal and dangerous, as it can lead to severe injuries and a 100-euro fine by compromising airbag and seat belt effectiveness.

As summer begins, Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) expects over 100 million trips on the roads between July and August. With traffic levels set to soar, authorities are warning passengers against a common but dangerous habit: resting feet on the dashboard. While it may seem comfortable, this position poses a serious threat to your safety.

From a road safety perspective, putting your feet on the dashboard makes restraint systems ineffective. Under Article 18.1 of the General Traffic Regulations, drivers are responsible for ensuring all passengers sit in a way that does not interfere with driving or compromise safety. The DGT warns that if an airbag deploys during a collision, the force of the impact can cause severe injuries to the legs and joints. Furthermore, this posture increases the risk of the "submarining effect," where a passenger slides under the seat belt, rendering it useless.

While the driver is responsible for maintaining a safe environment in the car, passengers who ignore these rules can be fined 100 euros. It is important to remember that while the passenger pays the fine, the driver is ultimately responsible for ensuring the vehicle is operated safely.

Many people are unaware of the physical risks involved in this habit, but it becomes a significant danger during long summer journeys. Traffic agencies emphasize that sitting correctly is not just about following the law; it is a vital step in preventing life-changing injuries in the event of an accident. With so many cars on the road this summer, everyone needs to stay alert and prioritize safety.
