Spain's DGT Waives License Renewal Fees for Drivers Over 70

Spain's DGT has introduced a new driving license renewal policy, exempting drivers aged 70 and above from administrative fees while still requiring mandatory safety tests.

Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has introduced a new policy for renewing driving licenses. It aims to balance driver independence with essential road safety, while also easing the financial cost for some groups. This policy includes discounts that exempt certain individuals from paying administrative fees.

Drivers aged 70 and above will no longer have to pay the 24.58 euro administrative fee when renewing their license. However, this financial break does not mean they can skip the mandatory tests at a Driver Recognition Center. Passing these evaluations is crucial for getting the "psychophysical aptitude report," which confirms a driver's ability to drive safely on public roads.

Typically, a driver's license is valid for ten years until the holder reaches 65. After turning 65, the license must be renewed every five years for both cars and motorcycles.

For professional drivers, such as those with bus or truck licenses, renewal is required every three years. This shorter renewal period ensures that these professionals' physical and psychological conditions are updated more frequently, which helps guarantee maximum road safety and reduces traffic accidents.

To renew a driver's license in Spain, you will need to submit several specific documents.
