Spain's DGT Targets Professional Transport Safety Campaign
Spain's DGT has launched a nationwide safety campaign from February 9-15, targeting professional transport of goods and passengers to reduce risks and ensure compliance.
Spain's traffic authority, the DGT, has launched a new safety campaign targeting professional transport of goods and passengers. This initiative, running from February 9 to 15 across all of Spain, including the Canary Islands, highlights the DGT's ongoing focus on safety in a vital part of the country's road network. The campaign aims to reduce risks associated with heavy vehicles and those carrying many people, according to the agency.
This operation is especially important given the results of past campaigns. For example, data from the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands shows that a previous campaign in February 2025 (sic) found 595 violations after checking 2,824 vehicles there. Out of these, 2,376 were lorries, leading to 492 reports, and 448 buses were checked, resulting in 103 violations. These numbers highlight that rule-breaking continues in a sector where accidents can have very serious consequences.
In the coming days, officers from the Civil Guard's Traffic Group, working with local and regional police, will increase checks on all kinds of roads, at all times. They will pay particular attention to routes frequently used by these vehicles. The operation will thoroughly examine required documents and the vehicles' technical state, looking at their overall condition, safety systems, and whether they meet regulations.
The campaign will also focus on drivers, making sure they have the right qualifications and permits, and that they follow rules for driving and rest times. This is crucial for preventing accidents caused by tiredness. Officers will also look for common causes of accidents, such as speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These behaviours pose an even greater risk when driving large vehicles or carrying passengers.
The DGT stresses that this campaign is about prevention. It aims to make both companies and drivers aware of the vital need to follow rules to keep everyone on the road safe.
