Spain’s DGT Leverages Cloud Technology and 5G to Transform Road Safety
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic has launched the "DGT 3.0" cloud platform, utilizing 5G and IoT technology to provide real-time road safety data directly to vehicle navigation systems.
Digital technology is now the cornerstone of Spain’s new road safety strategy. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has ramped up its "DGT 3.0" platform, a cloud-based system that already processes about 5,000 alerts every day. This system does more than just track accidents; it acts as a central data hub that feeds real-time information directly to modern vehicle navigation systems and mobile apps.
The platform’s strength lies in its use of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). By connecting road sensors, beacons, and vehicles, the system creates a two-way flow of information. This allows for much faster responses to road incidents than traditional methods. As a pioneer in Europe, the project aims to reduce accidents by predicting risks and improving fuel efficiency by easing traffic congestion.
The system is also being used to manage urban mobility. It tracks data like parking availability, loading zones, and Low Emission Zones (LEZs). Because the platform integrates with systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, drivers can receive these updates directly on their vehicle’s dashboard without needing extra devices.
This initiative is part of a broader European push toward connected mobility, where real-time data is viewed as a vital public service. By creating a single, reliable source for traffic information, the DGT hopes to make driving safer, more sustainable, and more efficient. As the cloud infrastructure grows, it will support even more digital services designed to improve the driving experience in the near future.
