Spain’s DGT Launches Crackdown on Illegal Exhaust Modifications During Summer Travel Peak
Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic has launched a summer surveillance operation targeting illegal exhaust modifications, with fines reaching up to 600 euros and potential vehicle immobilization for non-compliance.
With 104 million trips expected on Spanish roads this July and August, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched a special surveillance operation. According to the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), authorities are stepping up routine checks, with a particular focus on illegal vehicle modifications—specifically exhaust systems.
Under Article 7 of the General Traffic Regulations, it is strictly forbidden to drive a vehicle without a muffler or with modifications designed to bypass noise-reduction systems. These rules exist for more than just noise control; they ensure that exhaust gases are properly processed. This prevents excessive smoke that could obstruct the visibility of other drivers and stops the release of harmful fuel residue.
From a technical standpoint, any non-approved exhaust modification will cause a vehicle to fail its Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV). Inspection centers are required to ensure that noise levels and pollutant emissions remain within the manufacturer’s original specifications. If tampering is discovered, the vehicle will fail the inspection, and the owner must restore the original system or install certified parts before the car can be driven legally again.
The financial penalties for non-compliance are significant. Driving with a modified or defective exhaust carries a 200-euro fine. However, if the vehicle exceeds local noise pollution limits, that fine can increase to 600 euros. Furthermore, if officers determine that a vehicle exceeds permitted noise or emission levels, they have the authority to immobilize the car on the spot to reduce its impact on the environment and local communities.
