Spain’s DGT Increases Roadside Inspections Ahead of May Long Weekend
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic has intensified vehicle inspections ahead of the May long weekend, warning drivers that operating a vehicle with an expired ITV certificate can result in heavy fines and insurance complications.
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has stepped up vehicle inspections ahead of the upcoming May long weekend. The agency is increasing checks on the road to ensure all vehicles meet safety standards, aiming to reduce the number of accidents.
All vehicles must undergo the mandatory Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV). The frequency of these checks depends on the age of the car, but they are essential for ensuring a vehicle is safe to drive. Displaying the inspection sticker is not just a legal requirement; it serves as proof that your car has passed the necessary safety tests.
Failing to keep your inspection up to date carries serious consequences. Driving with an expired ITV is considered a serious offense, punishable by a €200 fine. If your vehicle has previously failed an inspection and you continue to drive it, the fine can rise to €500, and your car may be immobilized. Furthermore, if you are involved in an accident with an expired inspection, your insurance company may refuse to cover the damages, as the vehicle was not legally roadworthy.
Data from 2022 shows that missing the ITV is one of the most common traffic violations in Spain. Authorities emphasize that simply having an appointment for an inspection does not allow you to drive a car with an expired certificate; the only exception is driving directly to the inspection center for your test.
To avoid fines and long wait times, the DGT encourages drivers to check their expiration dates using the official DGT app and to book their appointments well in advance.
