Spain’s DGT Deploys Drones to Enhance Road Surveillance and Safety
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic has integrated high-definition drones into its surveillance fleet to monitor risky driving behaviors and enhance road safety in areas difficult for ground patrols to access.
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has significantly upgraded its surveillance strategy by adding drones to its fleet of radars and patrol cars. According to the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), these drones have become essential for monitoring roads where traditional ground-based control is difficult due to the terrain or road layout.
Equipped with high-definition cameras, these drones can identify risky driving behaviors in real time with great precision. Their primary goal goes beyond just checking speed limits; they are part of a preventive strategy designed to reduce accidents on high-risk road sections. Because they can operate in complex environments, drones allow authorities to spot dangerous maneuvers and negligent driving that might otherwise go unnoticed by ground patrols.
Legally, any traffic violations captured by drones are treated the same as those recorded by any other surveillance device. Current regulations ensure that evidence gathered this way is fully valid in court. By integrating these systems, the DGT has expanded its reach and improved its ability to address dangerous driving, creating a more flexible and effective approach to road safety across Spain.
