Spain’s DGT Clarifies Which Traffic Fines Are Ineligible for Early Payment Discounts

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic has clarified that the 50% early payment discount on fines does not apply to serious infractions, administrative non-compliance, or cases where a driver chooses to file an appeal.

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that the 50% "early payment" discount on fines is not a universal right. While many fines can be halved if paid within 20 calendar days, this benefit is strictly off-limits for serious offenses that undermine road safety or administrative transparency.

The DGT explicitly excludes several high-level infractions from the discount program. The most notable is the use of radar jammers, which are designed to block speed cameras. Using these devices carries a fine of up to 6,000 euros and the loss of six license points, with no possibility of a discount.

The rules are equally strict regarding administrative cooperation. Vehicle owners who refuse to identify the driver responsible for an infraction, or who provide false information, lose their right to the discount and may face increased penalties. Similarly, the DGT maintains a zero-tolerance policy for damaging road infrastructure, tampering with traffic signs, or operating vehicles that exceed weight and dimension limits without proper authorization.

Drivers should also be aware that choosing to appeal a fine automatically forfeits the 50% discount. If an appeal is filed and subsequently rejected, the driver must pay the full original amount. By structuring the process this way, the DGT aims to prioritize road safety and resolve sanctions quickly rather than encouraging lengthy legal disputes.
