Spain’s DGT Braces for 6.88 Million Trips as Summer Holiday Travel Peaks
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic has launched a major operation for the end-of-summer travel period, expecting 6.88 million trips while urging drivers to prioritize safety and adhere to strict traffic regulations.
As summer ends, Spain’s road network is entering one of its busiest periods of the year. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) expects 6.88 million long-distance trips as holidaymakers head home, with the special traffic operation running until midnight on Monday, August 31.
Beyond the sheer volume of cars, authorities are urging drivers to prioritize safety, as heavy traffic often leads to dangerous habits. Current rules are strict: using a mobile phone—even while stuck in traffic—carries a €200 fine and the loss of six license points. Drivers are also reminded to maintain a safe following distance to prevent rear-end collisions, which is also punishable by a €200 fine.
Impatience on the road is another focus for authorities. Using your horn without a valid, urgent reason is prohibited and can result in an €80 fine. Officials hope these measures will help reduce driver stress, which is a leading cause of risky behavior and human error.
To help with travel planning, the DGT has identified the busiest times on the road:
- Friday, August 28: Heavy traffic is expected between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
- Saturday, August 29: Expect congestion leaving major cities between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
- Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31: The highest traffic density is expected in the afternoons, specifically between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Authorities are urging everyone to start their journey well-rested and to drive with patience. By avoiding distractions, following traffic laws, and staying completely sober, drivers can ensure a safe trip home. Remember: safety should always come before speed.
