Spain Rolls Out MiDNI App for Digital DNI
Spain has launched MiDNI, a new free mobile app allowing citizens to securely carry their National Identity Document for in-person verification, with online functionality to follow.
MiDNI is a new, free app that lets you carry your National Identity Document (DNI) on your mobile phone. It works alongside your physical DNI but doesn't replace it. The goal is to give people a more convenient, secure, and private way to prove their identity in person.
The National Police has been explaining the benefits of MiDNI to the public through a "true or false" video shared on their social media channels.
People can start using MiDNI from April 2, 2025. However, it won't immediately support online services. Public administrations and private companies have until April of this year to update their systems. Once adapted, the app will also allow for online identification, electronic signatures, and other digital transactions.
Authorities explain that "the digital DNI works alongside your physical one and can be downloaded and used on mobile phones via the free MiDNI app. Citizens can already use the digital document to prove their identity in person, but they won't be able to do so online for another year."
This system only shares essential data, which helps improve privacy.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Interior and the National Police to digitize public services. It can be used for identification across Spain.
However, MiDNI is only valid within Spain and cannot be used when traveling internationally.
A key benefit is its robust security. Each time you use the app to identify yourself, it creates a unique, temporary QR code. This code, generated by the National Police, is valid for only a few seconds, making it "impossible to falsify."
To use MiDNI, you need to have the app installed on your phone and an internet connection, either through mobile data or Wi-Fi.
