
Spain Records Over 5,200 Heat-Related Deaths This Summer
Spain has recorded 5,232 heat-related deaths since mid-May, marking one of the country's deadliest summers on record and highlighting a growing public health crisis among the elderly population.
This summer has marked a turning point for public health in Spain due to the impact of climate change. According to the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo), the country is experiencing one of its most critical summers since records began in 2015, with 5,232 deaths linked to extreme heat since May 15.
This figure surpasses the totals for the summers of 2022 and 2023, which previously held the record for the highest mortality rates. While current projections remain lower than the 2003 heatwave—which saw an estimated 13,000 deaths—the data highlights a growing vulnerability to persistent high temperatures.
The impact is not felt equally across the population. People over 65 account for the vast majority of these deaths, totaling 5,048 cases. Those over 85 are the most affected, representing 62% of the total with 3,256 deaths. There is also a notable gender disparity, with women accounting for 60% of the victims.
Regionally, the situation varies. The Canary Islands have seen a slight improvement, recording 89 heat-related deaths since mid-May compared to 129 during the same period last year. On the islands, the highest mortality was concentrated between August 1 and August 16.
Across the rest of the country, the trend has been uneven. July saw 2,025 deaths, a significant increase from the 1,060 recorded in July 2023. August has seen 2,147 deaths so far, a figure similar to the 2,172 recorded in August 2023, which remains the deadliest month on record since 2015.
The Ministry of Health’s annual prevention plan, which begins each May, is facing an increasingly difficult challenge. Because these high temperatures are becoming more frequent and intense, the data suggests that public health strategies must be strengthened to address what is clearly a long-term, upward trend.
